A safe, effective and natural treatment

Acupuncture treatments involve the gentle insertion of sterile hair-thin disposable needles into specific points on the skin, this encourages the body to restore balance and heal itself. Acupuncture increases oxygen and blood flow, it also stimulates the endocrine and nervous systems and aids cellular repair. It alleviates pain by blocking pain receptors and stimulating the secretion of endorphins and enkephalins - the body's natural pain killers.

In the UK Acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies, with an estimated 2.3 million Traditional Acupuncture treatments carried out each year by members of the British Acupuncture Council. It is also one of the safest forms of treatment available including conventional options.

Traditional Acupuncture originated in China over 2000 years ago and is based on the Traditional Chinese Medicine principles of Energy (Qi) and Balance (Yin Yang). Good health involves the smooth balanced flow of Energy through the body carrying nourishment and information to all tissues and organs via pathways (meridians).

Illness and pain occur when the body's Energy is blocked, or depleted and cannot flow freely through the pathways. The role a Traditional Acupuncturist is to use a set of skills to diagnose the imbalance, and devise a treatment plan to restore the normal flow of energy. This is achieved by inserting very fine needles into specific points on the body, to influence its physiological functioning.

Acupuncture helps millions of people every year feel happier and healthier

Due to the nature of Acupuncture it is very difficult to test it scientifically, however there is a vast amount of anecdotal evidence from those receiving Acupuncture to say it works - see our testimonials page to see what our patients say. As research methods progress to test Acupuncture effectively there is a growing body of scientific evidence emerging.

The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) recognise that Acupuncture provides relief for tension headaches, osteoarthritis, lower back pain, dental pain, nausea and vomiting.

The World Health Organization (WHO) found that Acupuncture can effectively treat many chronic and acute health conditions, and is an effective form of preventive care. Please click here to read the report.

The British Acupuncture Council have produced an A-Z of downloadable fact sheets covering many conditions. The fact sheets provide an accurate and unbiased summary of the available research regarding the efficacy of Acupuncture and can be found here.
